Prenatal & Postpartum Pilates

Pilates for Every Stage of Motherhood

Pregnancy transforms your body in extraordinary ways — and Pilates is one of the best things you can do to support that transformation. At Pilates One, we’ve worked with hundreds of expectant and new mothers since 2008, helping them maintain strength, manage discomfort, and recover with confidence.

Prenatal Pilates at Pilates One

Reformer Pilates is uniquely suited to pregnancy. The spring-based resistance system allows your instructor to reduce load as your body changes, while the carriage supports positions that become uncomfortable on a mat. Our prenatal-friendly approach includes:

  • Pelvic floor strengthening — The foundation for easier delivery and faster recovery
  • Posture support — Counteracting the forward pull of your growing belly
  • Hip and back relief — Targeted exercises for the areas that bear the most change
  • Breath work — Building the diaphragmatic breathing patterns that support labor
  • Safe, low-impact movement — All the benefits of strength training without jarring impact

You’re welcome in most of our group Reformer classes throughout your pregnancy, except Jump Board Reformer. For first-time Pilates students who are pregnant, we offer a complimentary 15-minute personal evaluation or 50% off a private session to ensure we set you up safely.

Postpartum Recovery

The postpartum body needs rebuilding from the inside out. Crunches and planks can actually worsen diastasis recti — the abdominal separation that affects two-thirds of pregnancies. Reformer Pilates takes the opposite approach: deep, controlled activation of the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor re-engagement, and progressive loading that respects your body’s healing timeline.

Common Postpartum Goals We Address

  • Diastasis recti closure — Targeted Reformer exercises that draw the separation closed without harmful flexion
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation — Restoring strength and control after delivery
  • Core rebuilding — Progressive strengthening from the deepest layers outward
  • Posture correction — Counteracting the forward-rounded posture of nursing and carrying
  • Mental health — Movement as self-care during the postpartum transition

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pilates safe during pregnancy?

Yes — Pilates is one of the safest and most recommended forms of exercise during pregnancy. At Pilates One, we welcome healthy pregnancies in most of our Reformer classes, with the exception of Jump Board Reformer. The low-impact, controlled movements strengthen your pelvic floor, support your changing posture, and help manage common pregnancy discomforts like back pain and hip tightness.

When should I start prenatal Pilates?

You can begin Reformer Pilates at any point during a healthy pregnancy, even if you've never done Pilates before. Many clients start in their first trimester and continue through the third. If you're new to Pilates, we recommend a private session or our complimentary 15-minute evaluation first so we can assess your needs and guide you to the right classes.

Can Pilates help with diastasis recti?

Yes. Pilates is one of the most effective movement practices for diastasis recti recovery. Reformer exercises target the deep transverse abdominis — the muscle that draws the separated rectus abdominis back together — without the crunching or flexion movements that can worsen the separation. Many of our postpartum clients see significant improvement within 8-12 weeks of consistent practice.

How soon after giving birth can I return to Pilates?

Most clients return 6-8 weeks after a vaginal delivery and 8-12 weeks after a cesarean section, with clearance from their OB/GYN. We recommend starting with private sessions to rebuild your pelvic floor and deep core before joining group classes. Every recovery is different — your instructor will meet you where you are.

Do I need to tell my instructor I'm pregnant?

Yes, always. Your instructor needs to know so they can provide appropriate modifications — adjusting spring tensions, avoiding certain supine positions after the first trimester, and modifying exercises that could compromise blood flow. Your safety and your baby's safety are our top priority.

Do you offer a discount for prenatal or postpartum private sessions?

Yes, first-time Pilates students who are pregnant get a complimentary 15-minute personal evaluation or 50% off a private session, so we can set you up safely from day one.

Is Jump Board Reformer safe during pregnancy?

No, we ask pregnant clients to skip Jump Board Reformer. You’re welcome in most of our other group Reformer classes throughout a healthy pregnancy.
