Your First Reformer Pilates Class
What to Expect at Pilates One
Walking into a Reformer Pilates studio for the first time can feel intimidating — the machines look complex, the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and you might wonder if you’re fit enough. Here’s the truth: every single person in the studio started exactly where you are. And at Pilates One, our instructors are specifically trained to make your first experience comfortable, safe, and genuinely enjoyable.
Before You Arrive
What to Bring
- Grip socks — Required for every class. If you don’t have them, we sell them at the studio.
- Water bottle — You’ll want it.
- Comfortable clothing — Form-fitting is best. No zippers, buttons, or metal that could scratch the equipment.
Book Your Class
Reserve your spot online through our website or the MindBody app. While we accept walk-ins, you risk not getting a spot — our classes fill up, especially morning and evening sessions. We recommend the REFORMER FLOW class for your first visit, which focuses on precision and the fundamentals.
Arrive 10 Minutes Early
Your instructor will introduce you to the Reformer — the sliding carriage, springs, straps, and footbar. They’ll show you how to adjust springs and explain the basics so you feel confident before class begins. If you’re new and arrive more than 5 minutes late, we won’t be able to admit you — the safety introduction is non-negotiable.
During Class
A typical class at Pilates One is 50 minutes and follows this flow:
- Warm-up (5–8 min): Breath work and gentle footwork on the Reformer to connect body and mind.
- Main sequence (30–35 min): You’ll work through exercises lying down, sitting, kneeling, and standing on the Reformer. The instructor will cue modifications for beginners and progressions for advanced movers — all in the same class.
- Cool-down (5–8 min): Stretching and controlled movement to close the session. You’ll feel lengthened, warm, and present.
Don’t worry about keeping up. Pilates isn’t about speed or reps — it’s about precision, control, and breath. Your instructor will guide you through every exercise, and our small class sizes mean they can give you individual attention.
After Class
Expect to feel a combination of energized and relaxed — what our clients call the Pilates One feel good. Mild muscle soreness 24–48 hours later is normal, especially in your core, glutes, and inner thighs. By your third or fourth class, your body adapts and the soreness becomes a pleasant reminder rather than a surprise.
Most new clients see noticeable changes in posture and body awareness within 5–8 sessions. Visible tone and strength changes typically appear around 15–20 sessions. Consistency matters more than intensity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience for a Reformer Pilates class?
No prior experience is needed. Our classes welcome all levels, and instructors are trained to cue beginners, intermediate, and advanced clients in the same session. We recommend starting with our REFORMER FLOW class, which focuses on precision and understanding the mechanics of Pilates.
What should I wear to Pilates?
Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid anything with zippers, buttons, or metal hardware that could scratch the equipment. Grip socks are required — if you don't have a pair, you can purchase them at the studio.
Is the first class free?
We don't offer complimentary classes, but we have several New Client Specials at reduced rates so you can experience Pilates One without a full-price commitment. Check our packages page for current intro offers.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive 10 minutes before your first class. This gives you time to park, meet your instructor, and get oriented with the Reformer equipment. If you're more than 5 minutes late on your first visit, you won't be permitted to enter the class for safety reasons — we need to properly introduce you to the equipment.
Will I be sore after my first class?
Most first-timers experience mild soreness 24-48 hours after class, particularly in the core, glutes, and inner thighs — muscles you may not regularly target. This is normal and a sign your body is adapting. The soreness typically decreases significantly by your third or fourth class.
Where do I park for my first class?
Metered street parking is available directly outside the studio. We recommend the Pay By Phone app with parking code 40917, and suggest allowing extra time so you can still arrive 10 minutes early.
What if I need to cancel my first class?
Cancel at least 12 hours before your class through your MindBody profile or the Pilates One app, by phone, or by email. Canceling later than that counts as a late cancellation.
